I always watched birds fly ever since I was little. My father would feed them (i.e. hummingbird, finches, and the mean blue jays. However as an adult I have come to personally favor Scrub Jay's. I have a intimate relationship with them. "Jack" will take peanuts from my hand. If I am still sleeping, he will call to me outside my bedroom window. Yes, he knows all the rooms in the house and where I will be at certain times of the day. It really is about the relationship!

They seem to be the messengers of the gods. When a bird looks at you, you feel connected to nature.

When I was 13 I found out that I would never get to see a passenger pigeon. I believe people who came before me had no right to deprive me of ever seeing even one. I am 58 now and I hate extinction of any furture, bird ,mammal, fish, species, because I have no right to allow it to happen to the next generation. Besides birds are wonderful.

Birds matter because they are able to inhabit just about any place on earth. Resourceful, beautiful, adaptable... Need I say more? The mere sighting of a quail brings joy to my heart!

Not only are some delicious as one commenter notes, but the habitat in which the more elusive birds dwell is rejuvenating. By taking time to find a variety of birds all over the state of California, I am learning much about this amazing state.

When I'm out in nature listening to the birds sing, I'm as close to heaven as I can get. I can sit and watch them for hours and often do. The biggest thrill this year has been having a black-chinned female make a nest and raise her babies right outside my window. What a blessing!

Birds, to me, symbolize how free and yet so fragile the natural world is. They inspire me to tread a bit more lightly upon this planet of ours and to (try to) encourage others to do the same

Birds signify how fragile nature is. My encounters with nature seems to always leave me with symbols for striving to be a better human and take care of our planet. Determination and discipline are the symbols for my birding and photography. Children are oblivious to the birds around them. Some have said they never look up, so they don't see birds. It's sad really. Thats why I appreciate the Audubon groups who give access to bird watching awareness.

I have learned a deep respect for nature in the last 8 years.

Birds do, with effortless grace, the things that so many of us long to do. They soar. They sing. They hunt. Even caged birds quiver with wildness. They are above and beyond us. They are beautiful and astonishing. They humble us. The most agile jet must look on a humble hummingbird with envy. They are everywhere and yet remain so elusive. They inspire.
